На что им русский профессор прямо по-русски и ответил:
- О чем вся великая русская классика? Об абсолютной невыносимости российской жизни в любом ее аспекте. И все. Ничего больше там нет. А мир хавает. И просит еще.

K,

I have the book and read it years ago.

I love the description of rural life in Russia. Also Chekhov and Tolstoy do it well in their short stories.

If one lives in Norway or Wiscosnin one can easily relate to the desolate landscape, the huts, the wood fire, the cold, the frozen rivers and lakes....

Nice!

I am in the middle of Turgenev's Sketches from a hunter’s album right now. Not the most typical piece of Russian 19 century writing, and probably not top notch, but I’ve always had a soft spot for him. There is, however, not a lot of hunting going on in it actually.

Look at this week's NYT Book review. In addition to this piece there are many interesting articles dealing with Russia and its books.
