10) Albert Alexander aalexander@pvsurgical.com via listserv.utoronto.ca to SURGINET Just to inject a little reality into this discussion, at many U.S. colleges and Universities much of the actual teaching is done by "adjunct faculty" and "teaching assistants." Adjunct faculty are typically part timers, they do not have tenure, and they may be getting a relatively small compensation compared with the tenured faculty. I have heard of cases where they were getting paid around $1600 to teach three nights per week and offer office hours, for a semester. This would be approximately 4 months. In one case the poor guy was taking up a collection to make bus fare to get home. This is not a "King's Ransom." In the case of teaching assistants they are graduate students in MA or PhD programs. They usually have their basic tuition covered and get a stipend which barely covers living expenses. They may function as "section leaders"- running labs, having there own office hours, etc. Some may be the only "Professor" the student sees. I am speaking from 100% certainty that this was the case at a highly ranked U.S. Public University. So the students are getting taught by a MA candidate who is basically getting a little over minimum wage while the University is raking in the tuition from 200+ students in their class. As a side note, many of the individuals face an extremely difficult job market. There are not many openings for someone with expertise in managing a puppet museum. Those who can exploit almost always do. In the corporate world, it is called financial management, I am told. The better you are at it ,the higher the bonus you get. Fair play, did someone mention?. Hey, what's that?. I must say that Ukraine is a corrupt country but not so poor to be compared with the corrupt countries of Africa. As long as there is enough Ukrainian vodka and lard in the country, no one doctor will lift his butt to work for $ 1,500 in Africa. Будьмо здорові! Slava
